Gut remodel of a 1870 Victorian home in North Adams, Massachusetts. Purchased as an investment property, my functions on the project were as owner/investor, designer, and laborer during 2018.
The house was previously carved into a two unit and used as marginal housing in the most recent past. My goal was to preserve the vintage features and floors, and reconfigure the floor plan to produce a value-engineered 4 bedroom/2 bath home with extensive outdoor living space and an ideal setup for short-term rentals. Furnished in a industrial Victorian style with animal motifs, all accessories and furnishings were designer sourced, most locally.
Carson Ellis for Juju Papers wallpaper, antique doors from a house in Marion, MA (purchased as set of eight at Brimfield), vintage barber cabinet with Vermont Montclair Danby marble from kitchen counter slab.
The sink was reclaimed from the downstairs bathroom and legs salvaged in Portland, OR. Vintage medicine cabinet and illuminated makeup mirror sourced at local flea markets. Towel holder previously located in the basement. Sconce from Rejuvenation.
Locally sourced French doors and replacement siding complete the read porch. Original cedar beadboard and ceiling remain intact.
Former location of a 40’s era kitchen, poorly maintained and remodeled over the years. New opening were cut for antique screens sourced locally.
We added a pair of closets and a window bench to this space located through the master bedroom (formerly the upstairs “kitchen”). A kick heater was added to the bench whose seating surface was made from leftover wood from the matched set of antique doors.
Emma Shipley for Clarke and Clarke wallpaper anchors the new space. The sink was pulled out of old wallpaper store cum bar recently acquired by the contractor.
One of the best finds of the local flea market season - this doctor’s scale has a solid brass slide pound indicator. Found during a rainstorm for $35.
